How to Choose an SEO Agency in St Helens: The Questions to Ask

There are a lot of people selling SEO in and around St Helens, and the sales pitch is nearly identical whether the person behind it is excellent or useless. Here is what I would actually check, including the questions that are awkward for me to answer. If you want to hold me to the same list, how I work locally is on my SEO in St Helens page.

Updated October 2026.

Ask what you are buying, in hours

Not Bronze, Silver or Gold. How many hours a month, and spent on what. If the answer is vague, the work usually is too. It is also the only way to compare two quotes honestly, because £400 for four hours and £500 for eight are not close.

Ask to see Search Console, not a report

Anybody can build a PDF with green arrows on it. Ask to be shown the actual Google Search Console data for a client they have worked on, or for read access to your own from day one. The data is free and it is Google’s, not the agency’s. Reluctance here tells you a lot.

Ask who is doing the work

Plenty of local agencies sell the work and send it offshore, which is not automatically bad, but you should know. Ask who writes the content and who makes the changes to the site. If the person in the meeting is not the person doing it, ask to speak to whoever is.

I work on my own, so with me that question is easy. It is not a virtue, it is just clarity.

Agency, consultant or freelancer

For most St Helens businesses the size of the firm matters less than who does the work. An agency gives you cover if someone is off, but your account often ends up with the most junior person. A consultant or freelancer is usually the person you met, at a lower cost, with less cover. Ask either one how many clients they look after and how many hours a month yours gets.

Be suspicious of guarantees

Nobody controls Google. A guarantee of page one in a set number of weeks means one of three things: they are ranking you for terms nobody searches, they are counting paid ads as rankings, or they are going to disappear. Position one for a phrase your customers never type is easy and worthless.

Check they understand local specifically

Local search is a different job from national. The map pack, the Google Business Profile, reviews and local relevance carry weight that has nothing to do with your website. If somebody talks only about the site and never mentions your Business Profile, they are missing a large part of how you actually get found in a town like St Helens.

If you run an online shop

Ecommerce SEO is a different checklist again. Ask how they handle product and category pages, duplicate pages from filters, and out of stock products. If the answer is only blog posts and backlinks, they are treating your shop like a brochure site.

Ask what happens if you leave

Who owns the content, the accounts, the Google properties. The right answer is you do, all of it, and you keep it. Some contracts are written so that leaving means losing the work you paid for. Read that part before you sign anything.

The awkward one

Ask whether they think you need it. Some businesses genuinely do not. If most of your work comes through word of mouth in a trade where nobody searches, your money is better spent elsewhere, and anybody honest will say so. I have talked people out of retainers and it has never once cost me anything worth having.

Questions I get asked

How long does SEO take to work in St Helens?

Usually three to six months before the movement is obvious, sooner for the less competitive searches. Anyone promising page one in weeks is selling something else.

Do I need an agency based in St Helens?

No, but they need to understand local search: the map results, your Google Business Profile and reviews. Being nearby helps with that, it does not guarantee it.

Is paid search better than SEO?

They do different jobs. Paid search buys clicks from day one and stops when the budget stops. SEO is slower but keeps working. Most small businesses should get the free basics right first, the Business Profile and reviews, before paying for either.

What should a monthly SEO report show?

Search Console clicks and impressions, the searches you are appearing for, and what was done that month in hours. Not a page of green arrows.

If you want a second opinion on what a proposal is offering you, send it over. More about how I work on the SEO in St Helens page, or get in touch.
