Buying advice
Shopify or WooCommerce for a Small Shop in 2026
I build shops on both Shopify and WooCommerce, so I have no reason to push you towards either. Here is how I actually decide, and it usually comes down to two questions and then a third that matters more than both.
Is the shop the business?
If selling online is the whole point, and you are selling every day, Shopify earns its monthly fee. Checkout, payments, fraud checks, hosting and card security are somebody else’s problem. The theme is a proper codebase these days, so a bespoke design is entirely possible. What you give up is ownership. It is their platform, on their terms, with a transaction cut on top.
Or is the shop part of something bigger?
If the shop sits alongside a lot of content, a members area, a booking system, an integration with your CRM or a supplier’s stock feed, or products that do not fit Shopify’s idea of what a product is, WooCommerce usually wins. It is WordPress, so it bends to whatever the rest of the business needs. You own everything. You also carry everything, including the updates.
The question that actually settles it
Who is going to look after this in year two? Shopify forgives an owner who never updates anything. WooCommerce does not, so it needs a care plan or somebody in house who checks it monthly. I have seen more WooCommerce shops fail from neglect than from any technical fault, and I have seen Shopify shops boxed in by the platform when the business outgrew it. Be honest about which one you are.
A tie breaker from a recent build
If every product is a one off, preloved stock or made to order, WooCommerce with a stripped back theme is simpler than fighting Shopify’s variants, which assume every product comes in sizes and colours. If your products genuinely come in twenty sizes and colours, Shopify has already done that work for you.
On cost
Neither is cheaper over three years. Shopify’s cost lands in the monthly fee and the transaction cut. WooCommerce’s lands in hosting, care and the occasional plugin licence. Pick on who will own it and how the business will grow, not on which monthly figure looks smaller today.
Ecommerce builds start from £5,000 either way, detail on the web design page.
