Buying advice
How Long Does SEO Take to Work?
Three to six months before the movement is obvious. Twelve months before it is properly settled. That is the honest answer, and it is the one nobody wants.
Why it is not faster
Google has to crawl the changes, then decide whether to trust them, then test you against everybody already ranking. That last part is the slow bit. Search results are not a scoreboard that updates when you improve, they are a queue where somebody else has to move down for you to move up.
And the sites above you are not standing still either.
A rough timeline
- Weeks one to four. Technical work, fixing what is stopping Google reading the site properly. Almost nothing visible happens. This is normal and it is also the part that everything else depends on
- Months two and three. Positions start shifting, usually on the less competitive terms first. Impressions rise before clicks do, which feels like nothing is working, but it is the first real signal
- Months four to six. The terms that matter commercially start moving. This is where most people first say the phone feels busier
- Months six to twelve. Compounding. Pages that have been live a while start pulling their weight and the results stop being fragile
What makes it faster or slower
An established site with a decent history moves quicker than a domain registered last month. A local search in a town moves quicker than a national one. A site with genuine technical problems spends its first two months on repairs instead of progress.
And honestly, a business that answers questions quickly and gets content approved gets results faster than one where every page waits three weeks for sign off. That part is not down to the SEO.
What to watch instead of rankings
Rankings bounce around daily and watching them will drive you mad. Watch impressions in Search Console instead. Impressions rising while clicks stay flat means you are climbing but have not reached the part of the page where people click yet. That is progress, and it is the earliest honest signal you get.
Then watch enquiries. That is the only number that pays anybody.
When to give up on somebody
If six months have passed and impressions have not moved at all, something is wrong. Not necessarily dishonesty, but something. Ask to see the Search Console data directly rather than a summary in a PDF. If nobody will show you that, you have your answer.
